Fort Kearny Outdoor Expo

I have a passion for the outdoor lifestyle; fishing, archery, target shooting, biking, hiking, walking, camping, skiing, plus much more.  If I could spend all day outdoors I could.  I enjoy telling individuals all about Nebraska’s wonderful state park and recreation areas.  Nebraska has so much to offer when it comes to being outdoors especially through Nebraska Game and Parks.  Trails, lakes, historic forts, fishing ponds, camping and other recreation areas.  You will always find something to do in this state.

On May 7th, 2016 Fort Kearny will be hosting their annual Outdoor Expo 9am to 4pm.  This is a great opportunity for individuals of all ages (yes, even children) to explore, learn and grow their knowledge of the great outdoors.  Experts will be instructing kayaking, fishing, archery, camping, cooking and much more.  Check out demonstrations, learn about Nebraska fish and wildlife species.  Also, you will not want to miss the Timberworks Lumberjack Show!  I hope to see everyone out there this year.

Weekend Events June 14th-16th

NebraskaLand Days is going on in North Platte. You can wrangle with some cowboys and check out the Buffalo Bill Rodeo on Saturday.

Sage Hill Vineyards and Winery is hosting a kayak race to raise funds for the Parks Community Center. $25 gets you into the race and some food. The event starts at 2pm on Saturday and I plan to attend.

Weekend Events May 31st-June 2nd

I can feel the heat of summertime already and I am really excited. There are so many events going on this summer it is hard to keep track of them all. This weekend Celebrate Lincoln begins today and goes on tomorrow (Saturday June 1st). Montgomery Gentry will be performing downtown Lincoln Saturday as part of the event.

Taste of Omaha begins today and runs through Sunday. This has always been one of my favorite events, it sits right along the riverfront and the downtown park in Omaha. This is a great family event; plenty of food, vendors and entertainment.

If you know of any events that are happening this summer, please email me with the details and I will be willing to share the information. Enjoy the summer, but remember to be safe. If you drink, please remember to designate a driver.

2013 Nebraska Games and Parks Pass

Do you have your 2013 Nebraska Games and Parks Pass?  If you don’t, I would encourage you to get one today!  The weather forecast looks great for being outdoors this weekend; I recommend in checking out one of Nebraska’s State Parks.  There are plenty of parks to choose from all across the state; which one will you be going to this weekend?

Platte River State Park

Platte River State Park has never crossed my mind before this year, I always knew it was right off I-80 in the opposite direction of Mahoney State Park.  I have been to Mahoney State Park several times, but never Platte River State Park.  I took a little adventure to the park yesterday, my hopes was to go on a horse trail ride, but those ended at 3pm.  So, instead I went for a paddle boat ride around Owens Lake.  It’s not a big lake, but it was peaceful just being able to sit on a paddle boat and float for a little bit while I drank some ice tea.  There were a few families fishing around the lake, just hoping to catch a big fish of some kind.

I also learned that Platte River State Park is the first state park in Nebraska to have a open archery.  A good friend of my dad’s Roger Sykes was the one that pushed and convinced the state to open one at the park.  Roger is no longer with us, but the archery was placed in memory of his name.

Whether you want to come for a day or stay a few nights in a cabin with your family, I highly recommend that individuals and families take a little time out of their summer to come visit this state park.  I believe that park has a lot of opportunities for growth and can not wait to see what exciting things they will offer to guest in the next couple of years.  The staff I met were friendly and helpful and what to make sure you enjoy your visit.  I know I plan on going back soon in order to ride some horses and I hope I will be seeing you there as well!
